Now that the summer heat is behind us, I’m excited to get back outside with my wife and kids, and one of our new favorite spots in Oklahoma City is the Wheeler District’s Ferris Wheel.
The Wheeler District is an up-and-coming piece of property that sits on the south bank of the Oklahoma River. When complete, it will serve as home to a new neighborhood, dining and retail space, an urban farm, and even a proposed school. Every aspect of the Wheeler District was designed to encourage its residents and guests to enjoy its full potential without having to leave the neighborhood.
The centerpiece of the Wheeler District is a ferris wheel, which sits 100 feet above the Oklahoma River. This historic ferris wheel originally sat on the Santa Monica Pier, but now finds its place among the Oklahoma City skyline for guests to enjoy from early Spring to late Fall. And if you’re wondering how the Santa Monica Pier Ferris Wheel ended up in Oklahoma City, you might be amused to know that they purchased it off of eBay. It’s true!
Sitting at the base of the Ferris Wheel, it’s impossible to not be in awe of its sheer size and structure. Once on board, the gondolas lift you high above the shoreline allowing for breathtaking views of downtown Oklahoma City and the riverbanks that run east to west. There truly is no other experience like it in the city.
The fun isn’t just for adults as our kids, who range from ages 1 to 10, found it to be an exhilarating break from the normal playgrounds we’ve grown accustomed to. However, if you’re on a romantic date with your sweetheart, grab a glass of wine or beer from one of the food trucks set up at the base of the ferris wheel and enjoy the sunset from a birds eye view. Regardless of who is in your group, you are sure to have a memorable time.
If you’re thinking that the Ferris Wheel is the only thing to do, you’ll be pleased to know that the Wheeler District has already set up an amazing landscape. On the opposite side of the park was an area set up with a wide variety of games and picnic tables. Between the ferris wheel and the seating area lies a large yard, lined with hammocks which are perfect to relax in during the cool autumn evenings, and there’s enough space on the lawn for you and your family to play catch, or perhaps just have a picnic on a blanket.
The Wheeler Ferris Wheel is open through mid-November, and tickets can be purchased in advance by visiting them online at https://www.wheelerdistrict.com/ferris-wheel/
